Acitrom in modern anticoagulation: A review of pharmacological profiles, dietary restrictions, and safety monitoring

Abstract
Anticoagulant therapy
remains the cornerstone in the prevention and treatment of thromboembolic
disorders. Acitrom® (acenocoumarol), a vitamin K antagonist (VKA), has been
extensively prescribed in countries such as India and several European nations
for decades. Despite the increasing adoption of direct oral anticoagulants
(DOACs), Acitrom continues to play a vital role in patients with mechanical
heart valves, rheumatic valvular disease, antiphospholipid syndrome, and in
situations where DOACs are contraindicated or unaffordable. Owing to its narrow
therapeutic index, Acitrom requires individualized dosing, regular
International Normalized Ratio (INR) monitoring, careful dietary management,
and vigilance regarding drug interactions. This review discusses the
pharmacological profile of Acitrom, current clinical applications, dietary
considerations, safety monitoring, adverse effects, and its place in modern
anticoagulation practice.
