Abstract
This study provides an exhaustive examination of the socio-economic
contributions made by housewives in the Imphal East district of Manipur,
strictly focused on a singular objective: quantifying the economic value and
time-use disparities of unpaid domestic and care labor. Drawing upon empirical
data from 452 respondents, the analysis reveals that this unacknowledged labor
functions as a massive, invisible macroeconomic subsidy. The research tests the
hypothesis that formal economic valuation and state-sponsored financial
recognition (such as Direct Benefit Transfers) disrupt patriarchal hierarchies
and enhance women's intra-household bargaining power. The findings indicate a
severe state of time poverty among highly educated women, underscoring the
urgent need for structural reforms that recognize, reduce, and redistribute
unpaid care work.
