Abstract
The digitization of audio-visual collections
has become essential for preserving cultural heritage and ensuring long-term
accessibility. However, the effective management and conservation of these
digitized assets heavily rely on comprehensive and standardized metadata.
Metadata serves as the backbone for organizing, describing, and retrieving
digital audio-visual materials, while also supporting preservation actions and
rights management. This paper explores the critical role metadata plays in
enhancing the usability, interoperability, and sustainability of digitized
audio-visual collections. It reviews different metadata standards and schemas
tailored for audio-visual materials, including technical, descriptive,
administrative, and preservation metadata. Furthermore, the study highlights
best practices for metadata creation, maintenance, and integration within
digital asset management systems. Challenges such as metadata consistency,
interoperability across platforms, and evolving preservation needs are also
discussed. By emphasizing metadata’s central role, this study provides insights
into strategies for improving the conservation and management of digitized
audio-visual documents, ultimately supporting cultural institutions in
safeguarding digital heritage for future generations.
